Sri Lanka being an island which surrounded by the beautiful Indian Ocean, the beach is never far away. The country is gifted with over a 1000 miles of beautiful golden sandy beaches that are surrounded with coconut palms which makes it the perfect destination for a beach holiday. One unique experience you should not miss while here is to spend some good time on Sri Lanka beaches. Every year, thousands of tourists from all around the world visit Sri Lanka to experience the beauty, adventures, and offerings of these gorgeous sandy shores.

As there are plenty of beaches in Sri Lanka, many luxurious resorts and villas as well as budget hotels have been developed around these beaches to offer tourists some of the best beach holidays. The west coast beaches are the most developed, flooded with tourists during the winter season. In comparison, much of the east coastline remains totally untouched, with just a few places boasting any sort of tourist facilities, and many others waiting to be discovered.

The main attraction for visitors and locals are definitely the beaches but some places like Galle on the south coast carries historical heritage sites which adds extra value to a great sun and sand holiday break. The journey along the west and south-west coastline also offers interesting stopovers such as batik production plants or turtle breeding places, or visiting to a local temple, tasting local fruits from roadside vendors and getting firsthand knowledge on the art of toddy making.

The west and south coastline Sri Lanka beaches starts from Negombo, 37 km north of Colombo and curves southwest along the coastline for 273 km up to Hambantota. This is undoubtedly the better developed of the two zones in the island today for most of the hotels and resorts. The coast south of Colombo which is also called the "Gold Coast" is full with action with resorts stretches from Mt. Lavinia (a suburb of Colombo) and runs along the cities of Wadduwa, Kalutara, Beruwala, Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, Weligama, Mirissa, Dondra, Dickwella, Tangalle and lastly Hambantota. The southern beaches are sandier than the western beaches and do not shelve deeply in to the sea.

The east and north coastline Sri Lanka beaches stretches north in a mild arc from Arugam Bay up to Kuchchaveli about 275 km over the east coastline. Golden sandy beaches with miles of clear and shallow water, beautiful bays and coves, deep natural harbours, still lagoons and underwater coral reefs will always take your breath away. Some of the best beaches along the east coast include Nilaveli, Kuchchaveli, Marble Bay, Sweat Bay and the Dead Man's Cove with its magnificent harbour, to the north of Trincomalee. The southern section of the east coast includes the charming and gorgeous beaches of Passikudah, Kalkudah and Arugam Bay.

Sri Lanka beaches are ideal places for families and friends to meet and usually head to the beach on holidays, weekends, if only to gaze out at the sea. These beaches are not at all crowded by people and so you can do anything you want around the beach. For people who love to romance with the waves of the beaches can enjoy various water sport activities like surfing, scuba diving, kite surfing, snorkeling, fishing and canoeing, ect.
